Home ownership program

Habitat for Humanity of Kershaw County's homeownership program helps local families build and purchase safe, affordable homes.

Families partner with Habitat throughout the process by completing program requirements, including sweat equity hours, where future homeowners work alongside volunteers and supporters to help build homes and strengthen our community.

Through affordable homeownership, families can achieve greater stability and create brighter futures for themselves and future generations.

How to qualify? 

• Be a Kershaw County resident for at least one year


• Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident


• Demonstrate a need for safe, affordable housing


• Have reliable income and meet program income guidelines


• Complete a credit and background review


• Complete 250 sweat equity hours for each household member age 18 or older


• Attend required homeowner education sessions

A $50 application fee is required when submitting the application.

Brush with kindness
ramp program 

Volunteers with completed A Brush with Kindness wheelchair ramp in Kershaw County SC

A Brush with Kindness is a Habitat for Humanity program that helps low-income homeowners remain safe and independent by providing wheelchair ramps that improve access to their homes.

Through a partnership with the United Way of Kershaw County, Habitat for Humanity of Kershaw County can build ramps for eligible homeowners, assisting seniors and individuals with disabilities in maintaining safe access to their homes and continuing to live independently.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Own and live in the home where the ramp will be built or repaired

  • Reside in Kershaw County

  • Demonstrate a need for improved home accessibility

  • Be willing to accept assistance and approve the work

  • Have a homeowner, family member, or representative present during construction

  • Be able to assist with the project through family members or friends when possible

  • Meet income eligibility guidelines

Required Documents

Applicants must submit:

  • A copy of the property deed

  • A copy of the most recent tax return or proof of income for all adults in the household

  • A completed application

  • A $50 nonrefundable application fee
